What Is The Redhead Project?

A personal project created in February 2013 by New York–based advertising, editorial, and corporate photographer Keith Barraclough, The Redhead Project is an ongoing series of portraits of natural-born redheads selected through personal references and social media.

Each photo shoot is a collaborative process between photographer and subject, resulting in portraits that reflect the subject’s personality and style. Redheads bring their own clothes and props that exemplify their interests, styles, and personalities.  The project showcases Keith’s ability to take compelling personality portraits of redheads regardless of their comfort or experience in front of the camera. Modeling experience is not required.

Keith Barraclough is not a redhead, a fact most fans of the project find surprising. Portraits from one redheaded corporate executive’s photoshoot in 2013 planted the seed for the idea that has blossomed and evolved into Keith’s trademark portfolio series and, tangentially, created an enthusiastic community.

The project’s purpose is threefold:

To showcase Keith’s adverting and editorial portraiture, versatility, collaborative work style, and ability to conceptualize and execute a stylized, creative production;
To produce compelling, stylized, beautiful, playful, quirky and spontaneous portraits. Together with redheads we collaborate: we brainstorm ideas and plan out the looks of the photo shoots. It’s a unique opportunity— offered only to redheads!— to model for and help produce a professional photo shoot

In exchange for their collaborative and creative efforts, redheads choose some images to keep and share on their own sites and social media;

To foster publicity through collaborations with local, independent businesses entrepreneurs, and services, especially in cities outside our home base, NYC.

We welcome collaborations with hair and makeup stylists, event and photoshoot spaces, and local, independent businesses — especially ones with a redheaded connection; redheads who facilitate connections influence where we travel with the project. We love cross-promoting collaborative local businesses on our social media and website and the shared publicity is win-win!

Can Young Children Participate?

We’ve amended our policy about young children (under age 5) participating.
We will discuss with parents whether the project is a good fit for their minor children, particularly those who are too young to collaborate independently.

Collaboration includes:
1) an audition interview with parents and children (the latter, when possible and when age appropriate),  during which we brainstorm redheads’ ideas;
2) selecting clothes and props;
3) interacting with and taking direction from the photographer during the photo shoot.

Our collaborative goals still apply to children’s photo shoots, but we’ll place a greater emphasis upon evoking personality through expressions and reactions, capturing kids being kids and showcasing Keith’s ability to work with kids.

It is important for all potential participants—including children—to be familiar with images from The Redhead Project to get a visual sense of what the project is about.

Where Can Redheads Participate?

The project is based in Manhattan, New York City and we schedule photoshoots with redheads on an individual basis around Keith’s client schedule.

We would LOVE to bring the project to a city near you! But we need your help.

Since we do not charge redheads a fee to participate — the project is conducted around Keith’s client schedule—we are likelier to travel to locations where:

redheads have compelling ideas showcasing props, interests and creativity that we’ve never seen before

there’s a likelihood of strong local publicity, interest, and media coverage, especially if we feature props and services of local merchants and we can cross-promote on our respective social media

we have a growing social media following

there’s an intriguing space in which to conduct the photo shoots and/or a meet-up event: a photo studio, a gallery, or a space within a local merchant / restaurant, etc. Suggest and we’ll investigate!

Redheads influence where we travel with the project vis a vis all of the above.

Encourage local redheads you know to reach out to us at redheads@keithbarraclough.com and tell them to let us know you referred them!

We have organized past photo shoots in the following continental U.S. cities/ regions. Where we’ll go is not limited to where we’ve been (this includes international destinations!)

Quotes about the Project:
"I love that the Redhead Project images are individualized and powerful. They artistically scream “I am a redhead, hear me roar.” They speak for the subject by portraying their uniqueness, their personalities and their styles."
